Swiss-based sports federations grapple with pandemic setbacks

The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations, or ASOIF, is the Lausanne-based umbrella organization for the dozens of sports federations that compete in the Summer Games. Its president, Francesco Ricci Bitti, says these various federations, 22 of which are also Swiss-based, have been hit hard by the postponement and cancelation of events during the coronavirus pandemic and about two-thirds have accepted financial assistance in the form of loans from the government and the IOC. Still, he doesn’t see any of the federations going under. “The duration of this crisis is very important,” he says, “but if it is, as suspected, getting better I think all the federations could survive, in my opinion.”
