Swiss attorney general faces grilling over his handling of FIFA case

Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber goes before Parliament’s judicial committee Wednesday for questioning over his handling of FIFA corruption investigations. The panel is considering opening impeachment proceedings against him after the supervisory authority for the federal prosecution office disciplined him in March for serious breaches of duty, including that he neglected to report meetings with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Lauber, who was recused from the football probe last year, has appealed the watchdog’s decision. Criminal law professor Mark Pieth says the case has been an international embarrassment for Switzerland and that a decision to go ahead with impeachment proceedings would be a first for country.
